The PLAB (Professional Linguistics Assessment Board) is taken globally by people who want to be licensed as physicians in the United Kingdom. The test evaluates your ability to be a house officer at the senior level in the United Kingdom National Health Service or a trainee in the second year of the Foundation Programme.
You could write this test if you are a registered medical doctor from any country not in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom.
The PLAB test generally covers all the typical conditions you could experience as a trainee in the second year of the Foundational Programme. Also, you should know that the PLABs are split into two parts - PLAB Part 1 and PLAB Part 2. However, we will focus only the PLAB 1 here.
This is the first test you'll take for the PLABs. This exam contains 180 MCQs that you have to answer in three hours. Each question has around five potential answers, and you have to choose what you think the most correct answer is.
For each answer you get right, you get one mark. There is no negative marking, and the pass mark differs from year to year but is typically between 120 and 126.
The PLAB Part 1 can be written in a lot of countries outside the United Kingdom, such as India, Spain, South Africa, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Ghana.
You have four tries for PLAB Part 1. After the fourth try, you must wait for a minimum of 12 months before you can apply again.
If you fail again after the fourth try you may not be able to take the PLAB Part 1 anymore. However, you can theoretically try for the sixth time but on special request.
Before you even consider writing the PLAB Part 1, you must fulfill certain requirements:
The first thing you have to do is create an account on GMC. After you complete the registration of the account, you then schedule your PLAB Part 1 exam based on your country of choice, this costs around £240. Note that the PLAB Part 2 charges around £840.
The PLAB Part 1 is written in several countries worldwide. So, if you do not reside in the UK, ensure to contact the British Council in the country you want to write the exam. This is to confirm the exact location you take the exam.
